Hello and happy Saturday. I am writing this and scheduling it in advance…not that you really care, right? Today I want to tell you about Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu, which is probably one of the best books I’ve read (and will read) this year. This novel has been adapted to movie format, and I initially wanted to watch the adaptation, but I watched the trailer and now I’m not interested at all. If you have watched the movie, please let me know what you think about it.
Moxie is a love letter to young women realizing that this is a horrible world ruled by an oppressive and obsolete system called, you guessed it, the heteropatriarchy. Moxie is actually the name of the feminist zine that Vivian, our main character creates and distributes at her school, inspired by her mom and her rebellious youth. What Vivian denounces through her zine are the acts of sexism at her school, which are basically condoned or even performed by the administration. She also includes calls to action and throughout the novel it is beautiful to see how a collective starts forming around Moxie.
I read this book in two days and loved every bit of it. There were some moments I was so moved I cried. I loved how the characters were crafted, and I loved that they were not perfect, but we could read about them de-constructing these ideas they had grown to reproduce and accept as true, admitting when they were wrong, and committing to do better. (Obviously, not all characters, but you know, the ones that mattered).
