Hello and happy Saturday. I was supposed to write and post this review last week, but I didn’t, which is why we’re here today. A few days ago I read American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang and all I thought was “some of my students would absolutely love this book.” I don’t know what I was expecting before going into it, but it’s not what I got. I got a very easy and quick to read graphic comedy with three separate stories that interconnect at some point and end up being a part of one bigger story.
It explores the life of a boy whose parents are Chinese immigrants in the States and how he grows up as a Chinese American himself. I find that there is not enough middle grade literature on this topic, or at least it is not available to readers in Colombia, which is why I’d like my school library to have this book. There are some scenes that I think require some guidance from an adult, but all in all, it is a novel that young readers will enjoy and learn from.
