Hello and happy Saturday. I just finished reading Hollow City by Ransom Riggs, which is the second book in the Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series. I started reading it last week while I was away in a coastal city and I was alternating this with a book on stoicism, so I didn’t want something that was too all-consuming. I also didn’t want to read any romance because that gets old pretty quickly, at least to me. Hollow City was the perfect read for that because it was engaging and interesting, but it didn’t really demand many brain cells on my part. It is very clearly the second book in a series, so we’re in on the action from start to finish, and I knew that there wasn’t going to be any resolution once I hit the end.
In the first book, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, our main character, Jacob, who is grieving the loss of his grandfather, discovers that there had been huge secrets about his grandfather’s youth as a peculiar. This, I think, is a great read for people who want to get into fantasy or speculative fiction, or who enjoy some fantastical elements in the real world, as opposed to reading about completely made-up realities. I noticed that the writing wasn’t really great, but that didn’t affect my overall enjoyment of this second novel, and I think the author did a great job at reintroducing us to the characters and the general plot without devoting the whole first chapter to recap the previous book, which I dislike in series.
