Hello and happy Saturday. From the moment I first heard about Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams I knew I wanted to read it soon. Thankfully, it was available via Kindle Unlimited. This is a memoir by a woman who used to work at Facebook during its first years.
The title is obviously very telling, and I think she manages to get the point across smoothly enough up until the very last chapters, in which the tone completely changes and it’s like she was a high school student writing an essay who remembered they had to restate the thesis in the conclusion. All in all, though, it was entertaining, and it read to me as that, not as social or political commentary.
Now it’s important to note that Wynn-Williams did not quit Facebook; she was fired. This means that as much as she at least claims to have opposed several of its choices and actions, she decided to stay in the company, or at least she did not quit. I think considering this point will make the experience richer because the reader can be critical of what the author wrote, not just take all of it at face value.
