Hello and happy Sunday. It’s been a while since I last brought to you a review of a book that I considered a ‘must.’ Well, that’s exactly what We Are Not Free by Traci Chee. This novel is told from the perspectives of multiple teenagers during World War II in the United States, who were relocated from their neighborhoods and put into these camps, under horrible conditions because they were Japanese American.

I honestly didn’t know about this at all. I know about the Holocaust, of course; I am a Jew and my ancestors were victims of it. I also know that Jews were not the only people affected by this tragedy, but I didn’t know that actual legal American citizens were treated so horribly after Pearl Harbor. This book is obviously heartbreaking, but, considering it is the first one I’ve read about these historic events, it must be read by younger and older readers alike.
