I started this book while on a thirteen-hour flight home from Istanbul, after finishing one novel and DNFing another one. I guess what kept me reading was how absurd it was, and how it gave me Arrested Development vibes. Mind you, it wasn’t intentionally funny, like the show was, and it was very politically weighted and at times info dumpy. I think some readers will consider this a great piece of literature, but I don’t. I’m not giving it a one-star review because, aside from some (one too many) ‘jokes’ alluding to Hitler and the Holocaust (which are never funny, but also felt sort a weird topic to fixate on, especially for an author who is not Jewish -I checked), it wasn’t really problematic. The people who agree with the points the author was very explicitly trying to make will continue to agree, and the people who don’t, will probably either DNF or dislike this book. I don’t think anybody’s minds are getting changed here.
