Hello and happy Tuesday. I think this month I’ve only done bookish content, and though I’ve enjoyed it thoroughly, it’s about time to tell you about other types of content that I consume. The other day I was at my sister’s place because that’s where I go to watch movies or shows since I don’t have a TV and she’s subscribed to *everything.* The original plan was to continue watching Platonic, an Apple TV show, but it wasn’t working so we switched to Netflix and ended up watching Legally Blonde.

This was a rewatch for both of us, as the title of this post indicates, but whereas Elle Woods is one of my all-time role models, her viewing experience was way more casual. If you don’t know what Legally Blonde is about or haven’t watched it, shut up, go away. No, but really, go watch it. Do consider the fact that this movie is from the early 2000s and that the humor is a reflection of the time, so if you’re going to go all “well, actually…” and get sensitive over it, then maybe you’re better off reading You Between the Lines and making Taylor Swift poetry.

What can I say? I love this movie, I love Elle Woods, and I think she still validates the fact that women can both adhere to traditional gender stereotypes like being into fashion and generally caring about their appearance and subvert others by being smart. Elle is also a sweet and kind person, and she doesn’t stop being that way even when confronted by said stereotypes and by sexism and people not taking her seriously because she loves pink. I would love for all my students to watch this movie and understand that yes, you can be blonde and have big boobs and a tiny dog and still go to Harvard, and whoever thinks you shouldn’t because of how you look or speak or come across is plain old bitter and jealous. But what do I know? After all my favorite color is pink.
