I Watched Somebody Somewhere (and Loved It)

Hello and happy Friday. Happy last day of July. I hope this month was awesome, and I hope the rest of your year is that way. Today I want to tell you about a show that feels like a hug. I watched Somebody Somewhere while I was in Medellín at the beginning of the year, and I honestly don’t know why I hadn’t reviewed it yet. Maybe I was still processing it.

Sam, our main character, is in her forties and she is still coping with the grief after losing her sister to cancer. Sam was her caretaker at the end of her life, so it is safe to say she is dealing with the loss of her best friend while attempting to regain a sense of purpose. At work, she establishes a friendship with Joel, whom she went to high school and choir with. Joel runs an underground “church choir” group, which is really a weekly talent show. Doesn’t this sound like the premise of a beautiful show? Well, it was.

It was quiet, and it was a balance between hart-hitting and heartwarming, and it brought me a sense of hope, of relief that there is still time to build and to grow and to love, even if society and the world around us tell us there isn’t. While watching this I only thought about how powerful it could be to people experiencing loneliness, hopelessness, and who’ve settled because they believe there’s nothing else to life.
