Hello and happy Saturday. I remember reading Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli when I was in eighth grade and thinking what a stupid little book it was. I remember rereading it a few years ago, either in my late twenties or early thirties, and thinking it wasn’t as stupid as I’d deemed it when I was fifteen and dealing with my own existential issues. I thought that Love, Stargirl, its sequel narrated through one long letter written by Stargirl to Leo would be a silly little novel that would take me a day, maybe two to read. It wasn’t.
Look, if I didn’t know that Love, Stargirl had been written by Jerry Spinelli, I would’ve assumed its author was a woman. Whatever Stargirl lacked in maturity and perspective was perfectly present in this sequel. We get to read Stargirl’s own existential issues and it was just so refreshing. Honestly, skip Stargirl and only read this one. Sure, it didn’t take me a couple of days to read, and it wasn’t the silly little book I’d anticipated; it was so much more than that, though. I’m glad I picked this up and I hope you do, too.
